About the Commission
As per Article 243 (K) of the Constitution of India, State Election Commission, Jharkhand was set up on 14.05.2001 for overall superintendence, direction and control of electoral role and conduct of elections to the three tier Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies in the State of Jharkhand. The Commission has successfully conducted the elections to the Three Tier Panchayati Raj Institutions in 2010 & 2015 and Urban Local Bodies in phases in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015. The next round of Panchayati Raj election is due in 2020. State Election Commission is responsible for maintaining the continuity in the functioning of the Local Self Government Institutions and maintaining their institutional integrity by ensuring free and fair elections to these bodies.
State Election Commission is a single member Commission headed by the
State Election Commissioner. Following senior I.A.S officers who
retired in the Apex Scale of the I.A.S have held the office of State

The Functions of State Election Commission:
• Conduct of General and by-elections of Municipality.
• Conduct of General and by-elections of Panchayats.
• Preparation of electoral rolls for elections.
• Promote public awareness of electoral matters through IEC programs.
